HARDWARE DEVELOPMENT OF A STRATOSPHERIC GLIDING DRONE

The aim of the project was to develop an initial prototype of a stratospheric glider drone designed to provide microgravity testing services for space technology companies. During the project, the team developed the mechanical concept, aerodynamic design, and the foundation for the drone’s autopilot and avionics systems. The project was carried out by VAAL Airships OÜ in cooperation with the Estonian Aviation Academy.
As a result of the project, an initial prototype of the stratospheric glider drone was developed together with aerodynamic simulations, structural analysis, and overall system architecture. The long-term objective is to provide affordable microgravity testing services for the European space sector and to further develop advanced high-altitude autonomous aerial systems.
The total cost of the project was €50,000, of which €35,000 was supported by the Estonian Business and Innovation Agency (EIS) through the Development Voucher programme.
